‘Sore ear savers’ for frontline staff

A mum and daughter are supporting NHS staff by knitting ‘sore ear savers’.

Vicci Tyler (38) was on her second week of furlough leave when she saw a post on Facebook asking people to knit sore ear savers for staff at Boston’s Pilgrim and Peterborough hospitals.

Vicci tagged in mum Kathy Easey, who is retired and loves knitting.

The pair, who both live in Spalding, started following the pattern provided and when VIcci began posting daily photos of what they had been doing, Natalie Elves, a nurse from the Johnson Hospital got in touch asking them to make 20.

Natalie said: “We’re just very grateful of their help. We’ve been deployed to the ward to help provide patient care which is challenging for a lot of nurses as it’s all very new, but we’ve all supported each other.”

Vicci said: “Once they’re made, I’m going to take them to Natalie’s house and leave them on the doorstep so she can take them into the Johnson.

“Once knitted we wash the sore ear savers on a 60 degree cycle, dry them and seal them into a bag marked with the date and time of when they were sealed up and the nurses can start using them after 72 hours.

“I will soon have some ready for collection for the Pilgrim and Peterborough hospitals.

“Many people have contacted me from my post for the pattern.

“I’m a big supporter of the NHS, in this awful time and it’s just a thank you for what they are doing.”

Vicci is appealing for people to donate any unwanted buttons (18mm-22mm in size).

She added: “If you can help please contact me via Facebook Messenger.”
