A village clock will be ticking again in no time thanks to an £8,000 grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund.
The project, led by local volunteers, will repair the clock at Cowbit St Mary’s Church and communicate the heritage of the church.
The clock has stopped and the committee was facing a £10,500 bill to get it going again.
Part of the cash has been donated by the local council and the church has a dedicated team working to secure funding from charities.
The Lottery grant means work will start soon and be completed by the end of the year.
The committee want to trace the history back to at least 1907, the year the current clock was installed and are really interested to hear from anyone with memories of St Mary’s and special events that have taken place there.
They are also appealing to village residents for their help.
A spokesman said: “We shall not achieve our target without help from individuals and businesses in the local community.
“If you have enjoyed the presence of a functioning clock, however accurate, in your village, and want to ensure its continued survival to ensure you’re on time for your christening, wedding, worship, or whatever, please contribute to the fund.”
Donations can be left with Mary Haresign at 108 Barrier Bank, Pauline Start at 29 Stonegate or Val Day at 188 Barrier Bank or placed in the box in the village shop.
