Young Spalding United side show grit to halt Bourne barrage

Spalding United under-13s continued their impressive start to the new season with a battling 2-1 win over Bourne Town under-13s over the weekend.

Playing their first home game of the new PJAL Division Two season at West Pinchbeck, Spalding started superbly and went ahead when Ryan Thomas sprinted down the left and delivered for Harvey Wirkowski to net on 12 minutes.

Two minutes later Anthony Smith’s perfectly weighted free kick found Thomas, who coolly lobbed the Bourne keeper from 12 yards to make it 2-0 to the young Tulips.

Elliot Goodley was then unfortunate not to get on the scoresheet before the break as he forced a super save from the keeper.

A bad injury to Tom McKenna slowed Spalding’s progress in the second half – and Bourne capitalised to pull one back.

However, keeper Callum Haynes made two superb saves to ensure Spalding held on to the points.

Tulips boss Phil Woolsey said: “Bourne were terrific, but credit to every single Spalding player too for sticking together as we could have lost our way.

“We showed composure and grit – well done team!”

  • Young Dons under-9s battled out a cracking 4-4 draw with North Lindum Hawks under-9s.

Josef Bernardis fired the Dons ahead early on, but the Hawks swooped for two goals to go 2-1 up at half time. An unfortunate goal then gave North Lindum a 3-1 lead, but with Theo Snade controlling the midfield Callum Walker pulled one back.

Hawks hit back to make it 4-2, but Walker’s second and Freddie Burdall’s stunner earned the Dons a deserved draw.

  • Spalding United Orange under-16s started their season with a 2-0 win at Wittering Harriers under-16s.

Aidan Armstrong fired the young Tulips ahead, before Cameron Cross added a well-taken second.
