World record attempt is great social event for Spalding’s Welland Yacht Club

Welland Yacht club, Spalding. Nationwide race. NAMES:

Welland Yacht Club had a huge turnout of members and old friends as it took part in a joint Guinness World Record attempt.

Bart’s Bash was the inaugural race run by sailing clubs all around the world on behalf of the charity, the Andrew Simpson Sailing Foundation.
Andrew ‘“Bart” Simpson died in a training accident while preparing for last year’s America’s Cup competition.

Andy Prior, sailing secretary of the Spalding club which teamed up with Boston’s Witham Yacht Club for the day, said: “It was great to be part of such a big event.
“We raised about £300, but, for me, the big plus was that we had 28 boats on the water and 27 made it to the start line.
“I’ve been a member for eight or nine years and I’m reasonably confident that’s the most that we’ve had on the water at any one time.”

Just under 700 clubs took part and the Spalding club was 165th largest club in terms of members on the water.
Mr Prior said it was a great social event for the club with sailors aged from ten-60+.
Some people were enjoying their first return to the club for years and many stayed on into the evening.
