Spalding’s Wombles have been busy in the town again with neglected planters targeted for a renovation.
Members of the Wombles of Spalding Common have been clearing the streets of litter all year and at the weekend the sorry-looking planters at a town centre building were given a make-over.
The concrete planters outside the BT building were full of weeds and one of the two trees had died and was starting to look dangerous.
The team of Peter and Sandra Bird, Graham Walmsley and Sam Smith-Dale even bought bright plants to replace the nettles and thistles that had taken over the planters.
Two hours of clearing weeds, rubbish and removing the dead tree saw the planters ready for a new lease of life.
“The aim was simple, transform a much unloved corner of the town back to some kind of life as originally intended,” said Wombles Peter and Sandra. “We set about the task of weeding the large nettles and thistles from the planters as well as the years of discarded cellophane and general litter that was concealed in the depths. Two hours later and we were ready for the plants, bought from the market and the cost shared.”
The compliments soon flooded into the group’s Facebook page with more than 150 comments applauding the work.
“Epic result. Thank you guys, looking fab,” said Coun Rob Gibson.
“Wow! Amazing job you all need an award for the great work you all do above and beyond,” said Joan Gogay.
One of the founder members, Kieran Bowman, said: “We thank you all for your continuous hard work.
“We are 100,000,000 percent committed to this group and by the new members every day we will just get stronger. So proud of everyone.”
The group has almost 3,000 members and people are out every day around the town picking up litter while local schools have also become involved and young Wombles have taken responsibility for their areas.
