Fenland Aero Club’s Wings and Wheels Day proved a popular attraction.
The air parking area at the Holbeach St Johns site – usually home to club and visiting aircraft – became a huge display arena for classic vehicles from vintage caravans to classic cars, lorries, motorcycles and small steam engines.
A spokesman said: “There was something to attract the eye of everyone – old and young – and owners were only too pleased to talk about their treasured vehicles.”
About 100 vehicles from clubs and private owners from across the district came together for this annual event.
In addition to the ‘wheels’, there were 20 visiting ‘wings’.
Not all could be classed as classics but these aeroplanes, too, attracted great interest and could be inspected close up by the public.
There were hangar tours, lots of stalls and raffles, a barbecue and refreshments available in the clubhouse.
The control tower was run by Ray Nicholson, who kept the crowd informed about the progress of the Battle Of Britain Memorial Flight’s Dakota as it made its way around bad weather towards the airfield.
The star of the show flew low over the main runway.
The spokesman said: “All eyes watched her make four tight low-level circuits of the airfield all with the rear door open and a brave crew member waving enthusiastically from it, to the delight of the crowd below.”
