Why is there no suitable crossing?

For most people, crossing the A17 to go into Holbeach is quite difficult without a suitable crossing.

We are at the mercy of a small number of thinking drivers. I am a fairly able bodied woman in my late 70s and I cross to Boston Road South regularly.

Recently I spoke to a gentleman who was walking with a mobility aid and carrying a white stick. He asked me if he was walking in the right direction for Holbeach.

On further questioning it transpired that he lived at a five minute walk from the roundabout. I explained the safest way to cross the road, but because he is blind he did not want to do that, but preferred to use the underpass.

I took him to Cherry Tree Lane, the footpath leading to the underpass.

I explained that going that way is much further to his home and offered to help him across the road near to the roundabout. He preferred the underpass because he knew there would be no traffic to cause him anxiety.

That man, I imagine is not much younger than me, but it made me wonder whether the powers that be engaged their brains before they decided not to include a suitable crossing when the recent changes were made at the roundabout.

Are they waiting for a fatal accident before they see the error of their ways?
