West Pinchbeck man has spent half his life helping his community

The 90-year-old who has helped those with learning difficulties in the area for the last 45 years has vowed to keep going after celebrating his birthday with the people he helps.

The Spalding Gateway Club’s meeting on Friday, March 16 coincided with founder Maurice Chappell’s landmark birthday.

And to celebrate the group had cake and put on a spread for the West Pinchbeck man.

The group, which arranges a host of events for those with learning difficulties to try out, also enjoyed a concert from The Ukulele Orchestra of Spalding.

“The birthday celebrations were a complete surprise,” Maurice said. “I’ve not got quite as big a role with group as I used to as when you get to 90 you lose a bit of get up and go.

“But I still like being involved and the people.

“As long as I can do anything I will keep doing it.

“I’ve never thought of retiring but I’m very grateful that we have people at the Gateway who are very dependable.”

For all of the 45 years the Spalding Gateway Club has met at the Broad Street Methodist Church.

Sessions are Fridays between 7.30pm and 9pm.
