Welland Paddle Trophy honours belong to Cox

In total contrast to the previous Sunday, there was very little wind to greet the seven competitors for the Welland Paddle Trophy at Welland Yacht Club.

With that in mind, a short course was set for the first race. The Laser of Alan Chapman got away first from Helen Boyd, in a Solo, just ahead of the Laser of Alan Cox, followed by Adam Stabler (Laser), Richard Stedman (Comet), William Stabler (Solo) and Jerrit Schrauwers (Laser).

Cox was first to round the top mark (buoy 2) followed by Boyd then Chapman, Stedman, Schrauwers ahead of Adam and William Stabler.

Boyd and Stedman tried to stay within handicap on the faster Laser in front of them but, apart from an error from Schrauwers that allowed Adam Stabler to get past, the finishing order was unchanged. Once handicaps were applied, Boyd took the win from Cox, Stedman and Chapman.

The distance was lengthened to buoy 3 for the second race. Six boats took to the start with Cox getting ahead of Boyd with Adam Stabler, Schrauwers, Stedman and William Stabler following.

Unfortunately William Stabler got stuck in the reeds and, despite several attempts to get free, had to retire. Schrauwers also found the reeds but managed to get free.

Cox was again first across the line, followed by Adam Stabler, Boyd, Stedman and Schrauwers. This time Cox had enough lead to keep the win, with Stedman moving up to second. Boyd was third, followed by Stabler and Schrauwers on handicap.

Six boats again took to the water for the third race. Cox again led throughout and hung on to victory after handicaps were applied. Stedman moved up to second, Adam Stabler dropped to third with the final three places unchanged for Schrauwers, Boyd and William Stabler.

The two wins gave Cox the overall honours from Stedman and Boyd.
