A parish council has vowed to return stocks, types of which have stood in Pinchbeck since the 14th century, after the latest version was destroyed by a driver this week.
The historic punishment instrument was found destroyed on Monday morning.
After concerns were expressed that it had been vandalised, the family of a driver has since come forward to Pinchbeck Parish Council to say that they crashed into it.
The parish council now say it hopes that the insurance will cover the cost of replacing the structure.
It’s understood stocks have stood in the town since the 1300s, though the damaged stocks are thought to be much more modern.
The council isn’t sure exactly how old the previous stocks are.
A spokesman for Pinchbeck Parish Council, said: “They will be replaced.
“We’ve already contacted someone about looking to replace them.
“The driver who did it, didn’t know who to contact for a while but we now have their insurance details.
“We don’t know how much it’s going to cost just yet but the insurance should cover it.”
