The vandalism of signs put up to encourage social distancing in Spalding has been branded ‘abhorrent’.
South Holland District Council, which erected the measures in the town plus those in Holbeach and Long Sutton, says it’s working with Lincolnshire Police to identify those responsible following the incidents over the weekend.
The council posted on social media: “Several of our signs and markings in Spalding town centre have been vandalised.
“These are in place to help protect residents and businesses in their district.
“Vandalism is mindless, and wastes time and money.
“We are working with Lincolnshire Police to identify those involved.”
Coun Gary Taylor, the authority’s portfolio holder for communities and facilities, said: “Any anti-social behaviour such as graffiti is mindless, but to vandalise street markings and signs whose sole purpose it to protect lives and livelihoods is abhorrent to all rational people.
“The vast majority of visitors to our town in the last week have aided by the guidelines because they recognise we are simply trying to limit the spread of coronavirus as well as protect businesses.
“We will be working with Lincolnshie Police to see we can help identify this individual, or group of individuals.”
