Village history is man’s first book

A Surfleet man has published his first book – a collection of memories of the village in which he grew up.

Tony Blissett’s first book, An Account of Surfleet in the 1950s, was released last week.

His aim with the book is not only to share his memories of village life in the 1950s with people who’ll look back on it now with nostalgia, but also to preserve a historical record for the future.

He said: “While it might not be relevant in ten or 20 years, in 100 years’ time it’s going to have some relevance.”

Tony has been writing notes for the last 15 years but was inspired to collate them into book form when he joined the U3A social group and subsequently its history club.

When they were discussing publishing ideas, Tony felt inspired.

He said: “Joining the group inspired me to revisit the notes. I pulled them all together and asked my daughter, who’s a teacher, to edit it.”

The former Tate & Lyle sales manager has written the book in retirement, but said he is as busy now as he’s ever been.

An Account of Surfleet in the 1950s is currently available from three outlets. The book, which costs £5, can be found at the Glenside Stores Post Office and shop, as well as Surfleet Cafe on 14 Gosberton Road.

The book can also be bought directly from Tony. Call 01775 680688.
