Veteran Doug laid to rest

Hundreds attended as a campaigner for Britain’s nuclear veterans was laid to rest.

Moulton’s Douglas Hern was among those sat on a Christmas Island beach in 1957 to watch a nuclear bomb exploded 19 miles away as part of tests.
He was the driving force behind the British Nuclear Test Veterans’ Association and has campaigned for compensation and medals for estimated 22,000 serviceman who had to be a part of the test.
In July the government announced it was finally going to award a medal, though it hadn’t been awarded at the time of Douglas’ passing aged 86 on Saturday, August 19.
His funeral at the South Lincs Crematorium in Surfleet included a piped entry for the coffin.
Friend Frank White said: “It was a lovely service and there were a lot of people there.”
