Vandals cause bridge to be closed

Vandals have caused a bridge between Spalding and Pinchbeck to be closed.

Two Plank Footbridge had a handrail broken off and thrown into Vernatt’s Drain earlier this week.

Now Lincolnshire County Council, which oversees the bridge, has closed it ahead of a temporary repair.

The bridge is due to be fully dissembled and replaced with a more substantial structure as part of works to build the first section of the new Spalding Western Relief Road.

Karen Cassar, assistant director – Highways, said: “We’ve temporarily closed Two Plank Bridge for repairs following someone kicking or pulling one of the handrails off and throwing it into the Vernatt’s Drain.

“As soon as we were made aware of the damage yesterday, we blocked the bridge off on both sides, with a view to having it repaired and back open within the next week.

“This type of vandalism isn’t uncommon, so we’re looking forward to fully replacing the bridge later this year.”

Works to build the new footbridge and other drainage works in this area are currently expected to start this summer and will take up to eight months to complete.

More details, including start date, timescale and details of the new bridge, will be shared closer to the time, the county council said.
