Universal Credit launches locally

The Universal Credit system has begun in South Holland.

It is part of the government’s welfare and replaces income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance, income-related

Employment and Support Allowance, Income Support, Working Tax Credits, Child Tax Credit and Housing Benefit.

A South Holland District Council statement says Universal Credit “is designed to encourage, support and make households financially better off through work”.

This, the statement says, is achieved through the following:

l Monthly Payments: “Encouraging managing monthly budgets, making direct payments for rent and other costs, and replicating the working income.”

l A simple Earnings Taper: “The taper is applied to the amount of earnings, not the number of hours worked, making people financially better off when in work.”

l Easier Transitions: “Claims will no longer close once a claimant works 16 hours, but will be assessed each month on their earnings and adjust accordingly.
It also provides consistency for any changes in circumstances.”

l Claimant Commitment: “This acts like a ‘contract’ setting out tailored requirements and actions required in order to receive continued payment.”

Universal Credit is available for all Working Age Claimant groups in South Holland, and will initially be used for those making a new claim or undergoing certain changes in their circumstances.

The scheme is for people on a low income or who are out of work.
