Ultimate game of two halves as Long Sutton Athletic lose Baston thriller

Long Sutton Athletic 3
Baston 5

Long Sutton Athletic almost pulled off a great escape on Saturday as they lost 5-3 against Baston in a remarkable Lincs Junior Cup clash at London Road.

The Magpies found themselves 5-0 down against their ChromaSport Peterborough League Division One rivals at half time – and looked dead and buried.

But they very nearly forced extra time after a stirring second-half showing that saw player/boss Danny Goddard, David Wilson and James Ward all score.

Sutton also had two goals harshly ruled out for offside – including one from Goddard, who insists he was “miles onside”.

The two sides meet again at Baston’s Goat Pen on Saturday for a league clash, with Goddard hoping Sutton’s second-half showing will inspire them to victory.

He said: “Our defending and overall performance was the worst it has been all season in the first half.

“I’ll be honest, I absolutely ripped into the lads at half time. Something needed to be said, we were so sloppy and slow.

“Then we went out and played some of our best football – and in the end we’re disappointed not to take it to extra time.

“We had two perfectly good goals ruled out for offside, which was hard to take. But we have to take the positives into Saturday’s game there. If we play like we did in that second half, we’ll be hopeful of getting three points.

“The league is more important. We’re never going to win the Lincs Cup – in truth we’d have preferred a good away trip.”

Sutton: Taylor, Wayman, R Ward, Fitch, M Ward, Allen, Gomes, J Ward, Wilson, Cawthorn, Goddard. Subs used: Brothwell, Rushmer. Not used: Belakov.
