Tulips suffer costly loss… but Tigers bounce back to win

Spalding United’s play-off hopes in Evo-Stik League First Division South suffered a blow on Saturday as they lost 3-1 at rivals Newcastle Town, while Holbeach United came from behind to beat Wellingborough Town by the same score in the UCL Premier Division.

Starting with the Tulips, goals from Jose Gurrionero Munoz (24), Joshua Gordon (66) and Tim Sanders (77) fired second-placed Newcastle to a big three points.

Matt Nolan (51) did level the scores early in the second half, but Pat Rayment’s side fall out of the play-off spots as a result of the loss, having been leapfrogged by Gresley.

Tuesday night’s Sir Halley Stewart Playing Field duel with leaders Mickleover Sports (7.45pm) now looks to be a crunch date in the Tulips’ campaign.

Meanwhile, Holbeach left it late to get themselves back to winning ways against Wellingborough.

After a goalless first period, Jake Newman won and converted a penalty for the visitors on 68 minutes.

That sparked Darren Jarvis’ side into life, as Jamie Clarke (78), Andrew Tidswell (83) and Matt Warfield (pen 88) fired them to a deserved three points.

The victory propels the Tigers back up into fourth place.

In the ChromaSport Peterborough League, it was a fine weekend for Moulton Harrox.

The first team earned a super 1-0 win at Peterborough ICA Sports in the Premier Division, while the Reserves booked a PFA Challenge Cup final date against Baston by winning 2-0 at Crowland Town Reserves.

Back in the Premier Division, Pinchbeck United romped to an impressive 5-1 success at Deeping Rangers Reserves. But Division One side Long Sutton Athletic plunged further into the relegation mire after going down 1-0 at home to leaders Coates Reserves.
