Tulips fall just short of treble

Spalding United Women’s incredible first season reached a memorable milestone on Friday when they took on Lincoln United in the Lincolnshire County FA Women’s Cup final at Boston United.

A young Spalding side, formed only eight months ago and largely made up of u18 players rose to the occasion but were beaten 6-0 by the East Midland League Premier Division side.

Emily King was named Player of the Match, in recognition of a determined defensive display against a strong attacking threat.

It means they will not be able to complete a trophy treble but they are on target for a league and cup double, having already won the Cambridgeshire League Cup and standing just two wins away from lifting the league title.

They collected three more points on Sunday, despite not having to dirty their boots.

The day’s scheduled visitors, Newmarket Town Development XI, were unable to raise a team, so the Tulips were awarded victory, their 15th out of 18 games played of the season.

Alicia Podd and Ivy Lane at the heart of the battle.
