Double despite defeat

Spalding United u18 girls completed a Cambs League double, despite losing their last match 3-2 to King’s Lynn Soccer Club Lionesses.

A win or draw would have meant the Tulips claiming the league title for themselves, to add to their earlier u17/u18 League Cup success.

However, defeat by the West Norfolk team meant the title was shared by the two clubs.

The home side went ahead but Spalding rallied and Nic Krajewska sent Paris Sleight through to score. The Lionesses went back in front before the break and scored a third soon after.

With four of their players going off with injuries, Spalding faced an uphill task but dug deep and pulled a goal back when Lexa Feary’s speculative strike found the net for the visitors, whose side consisted mainly of u16s.

Feary won the player of the match award after giving her usual 100 per cent effort and commitment.

To add more glory to their season, three of the u18s represented Spalding High School in the Lincolnshire u16 County Cup final against Sir William Robertson Academy, of Lincoln.

A gripping match went into extra time before being decided in a dramatic penalty shoot-out that went to sudden death with the Spalding team emerging triumphant.

Ruby Quinn confidently scored her spot kick, Freya Willerton saved four penalties and Annabel Duce showed excellent leadership as team captain.

It was a good day for the school, with the u12s also lifting their county cup.
