Tulips beat Bury after Banbury battering

After a humbling by Banbury on Saturday, Spalding United bounced back with a ten-man victory over Bury on Tuesday night.

Spalding lost 4-1 to Banbury at the weekend, finding themselves 3-0 down after just 55 minutes.

Jack Roberts responded with a consolation ten minutes from time but Banbury burried a fourth in injury time.

They had a poor start at Bury on Tuesday as well, finding themselves behind to Alistair Conway’s 23rd minute goal.

The Tulips responded after the break though, Bart Cybulski levelling things on the hour by nodding home a Roberts cross before he produced a fine finish to make it 2-1 five minutes later.

Spalding had to dig deep with Lamine Sheriff was shown a straight red for a challenge after coming off the bench, but they did so to secure three points.

“The first half we carried on like we did on Saturday,” said manager Jimmy Dean.

“We weren’t playing to the plan. Despite a good start where we could have had a couple early doors, they ran over us without creating too many chances.

“But whenever you come from behind, which we’ve had to do quite a few times, it feels great.

“That’s ten away games and we’ve six wins and two draws which is a fantastic return. We’ve got to be happy with that.

“The quality of the first goal wouldn’t have looked out of place in the Football League. They should do it a bit more really.”

Dean described Lamine’s red as ‘harsh’.

“Players were slipping all night. I know it can look bad, but he didn’t go in studs up.

“We ended up with nine as Dion (Sembie-Ferris) had a thigh strain.”

One player Spalding were missing for the start in Suffolk was Lewis White who went to the Bury near Manchester.

“He arrived 15 minutes before the end of the game,” said Dean. “He’s in a world of his own that lad, but he came on and helped us see out the game.”
