Gary Palmer sealed the spoils in Spalding Golf Club’s Lincolnshire Free Press Trophy with a sizzling round of nett 67 at Surfleet.
Having already shot a nett 71 in his opening round, his second efffort was the best on offer in the strokeplay competition – and gave him an impressive winning tally of 138.
Palmer (4 handicap) started the day in sixth place and was some five shots off the lead. But he came through the field to win by five strokes from Richard Parker (72+68=140, with Raich Growdridge (72+70=142) in third spot on 142.
Other leading scores came from Wayne Flowers (143), Phil Packard and Jerry Philo (144) and Dan Hines and Simon Richardson (145).
- Spalding’s 3rd team, after losing heavily earlier in the season at Rutland Water, gained their revenge with a 4-1 win in their latest social match at the Surfleet course.
Winning pairs for Spalding were Rod Filby and Monty Brittain (3&2), Kevin Siddle and Dave Fitter (5&3), John Cretney and Pete Williams (1up) and Rob Sampson and Paul Tudor (5&4).
- Spalding’s mixed team lost their latest social match 4-1 away at Toft Hotel, with one game halved.
The only winning pair for Spalding was Ray Harrison and Millie Thorold (3&2), with Dave McDermott and Elaine Harrison halving their game.
- The annual 3rd team past captains’ Stableford competition was contested by 16 ex-skippers from different years – going back to the 1970s.
In the end, it was Phil Thorold who came out on top with a superb 41 points.
The current course chairman had his best round of golf for two years and attributed his success to a recently purchased new driver.
Popular octogenarian Billy Congreve was second with 39 points, with Rob Sampson third on 35 points.
- A social match played at Rutland County resulted in a 4-2 win for Spalding.
The winning pairs were Mark Jones and Joe Slater (3&2), Lawrie Haley and Calum Walker (1up) and Calum Lewis and Dave Perrott (1up). The pairings of Ged Cox and Barry Hutson and Mark Crozier and Wayne Flowers halved their games.
- Some 17 teams of fourbraved the heavy rain in the last Bank Holiday Texas scramble competition of the year – and despite the conditions, some very good scores were recorded.
The winning quartet was James and Jose Carles, Kurt Mason and Roger Climo (nett 54.55), with Pete and Olive Gooderson, Pete Berridge and Willie Ford taking second spot (57.1).
Craig and Calum Lewis, Hugo Kedzlie ad Lewis Wright came third ahead of fourth-placed Dina and Andy Reedman and Elaine and Ray Harrison.
