Troops descend on Crowland

Once again, Crowland is set to be under siege this weekend.

The biennial re-enactment of the English Civil War event is back on Saturday and Sunday with groups set to bring 1643 back to life.

It was in May of that year that the Parliamentary forces led by Oliver Cromwell laid siege to Crowland Abbey which was being held by Royalist forces.

Over two days that history will be repeated amid a weekend of fun activities, all for £5.

It all begins at 1pm on the Saturday with a ‘Living History Camp’ on Abbey Fields where there will be a host of things to see and do.

The Crowland Royalist militia will assemble at the Trinity Bridge at 4.30pm where they will flee to the abbey ahead of Cromwell’s arrival at 5pm.

Expect things to step up a notch at the abbey after 5.30pm.

On Sunday you can join the soldiers at the abbey for Holy Communion before they go into battle.

Events around the town start at Trinity Bridge from 12.15pm spreading to the abbey and the Abbey Fields camp.

Things will come a culmination shortly after 3.30pm.

Entry for the entire weekend is just £5 with wristbands available at the abbey.

A spokesman for the organisers said: “It’s a full weekend of spectacular re-enactments, interactive displays for young and old and living history camps to explore.

“It will include musketeers, pikemen, cannons and mortars with more re-renactors than ever before.”
