Trio pile pressure on Spalding Snooker League’s Division Two table-toppers

With Spalding and District Snooker League Division Two leaders Pyramid B enjoying a week off, three sides took the chance to close the gap at the top.

Now just six points behind the Bourne boys are Consti G, who roared to a 5-1 victory at fellow promotion hopefuls Holbeach C.

Andrew Grimwood’s (O7) 23 break in an opening frame win set them on the right track, before Martin Drury (R7), Paul Johnson (R14) and Nigel West (scr) completed the job for the Spalding side.

Hot on their heels in third, two points further back, are Services C after they enjoyed a 4-2 success at Pyramid C.

This one went the distance, but a 20 break helped Kev Fitter (O14) secure the win for his side in the final frame.

Another two points back are Boundary C, after they waltzed to a 5-1 triumph at Services D to keep their title hopes very much alive.

A black-ball win from Mick Walker (O21) was key for the Deepings side, who are ten points off the title pace.

Elsewhere in the second tier, a 33 break from Lee Pickett (O14) helped Holbeach B defeat Crowland C 4-2 in a rearranged game.

Jim Howe (O28) returned fire with a 20 break, but his Crowland charges are now down in sixth place – having also lost 4-2 against Pyramid D on Thursday night.

Up in Division One, Donington A’s miserable form continued with a 5-1 defeat at Tulips A.

The leaders have now lost five league games on the trot, having lost just once in the first half of the season.

A 32 break from Nic Savic (O42) inspired Tulips’ success, with Martyn Anderson (scr), Bren Bowman (O56) and Mike Sampson (O7) the other winners. They are now fourth.

That allowed Bourne SC A, who have a game in hand, to close to within eight points of top spot with a 5-1 victory at Services A.

A 25 clearance allowed Mark Gray (O98) to edge out Mike Knight (O14) 112-111, while Oliver Player (O35) rounded off the win with a 22 break in the final frame.

Third-placed Holbeach A blew their chance to close the gap on the leaders after going down 5-1 at Holbeach D. Bobby White’s (O21) black-ball win was all they had to shout about.

Meanwhile, a fine 46 break from Darren Woodberry (O35) helped champions Tulips B to a 5-1 away return at Sutton B.

After a slow start, last season’s title winners are now looking good for a top six finish.

At the foot, Boundary A remain rooted to the bottom after being handed a 4-2 home reverse by Services E.

There were plenty of highlights in this one, with Martin Spencer (O14) making a 35 break and a 33 clearance before Shane Cummins (scr) notched a 37 break.

Down in Division Three, Services F passed another tough test in their bid for the title as they saw off Long Sutton C 4-2 to go 13 points clear of the pack.

Oliver Turner’s (O28) black-ball win over Rachel Mayfield (R21) was key to their victory.

Whittlesey C are now six points clear in second after beating struggling Pyramid E 5-1, though third-placed Gosberton A do have a game in hand on them.

Also 5-1 winners were Consti D, who beat Donington B in a game that saw Martin Perkins (O28) make a 20 break.

Consti A went one better and battered Services B 6-0 to move up to fifth place.
