Town digs festival of archaeology

A huge mosaic completed by the people of South Holland was just one of the many exhibits on display at the third Festival of Archaeology.

Once again, Ayscoughfee Hall and Museum hosted the community event, which started on Friday and ran until Sunday.

Over the course of the event, 500 visitors were treated to talks, craft activities, and the chance to get hands-on in the dig pits and practical archaology workshops.

The big community project of a Horkstow mosaic replica was also on show. An Ayscoughfee Hall Museum spokesman said: “Thank you to everyone who took part in this amazing experiment.

“Children, adults, friends and family, your 6”x6” squares have come together to make this beautiful representation.”

A council spokesman said local groups attended and shared their stories, including Spalding Gentlemen’s Society, Crowland Abbey and Chain Bridge Forge – who brought along their virtual reality experience.
