Three new teams join the billiards league

The Spalding and District Billiards League season started on Monday evening.

This season sees a change in the handicaps of players with a weekly alteration of five points depending on if players win or lose.

Three new teams have joined the league, with an extra Donington team and teams from Spalding Services and Broadway from Peterborough.

It was a great start for Broadway as they won 7-0 against the other “new boys” Services.

Gary Norman (o250) in his win over Nigel Cherry (r70) played well with breaks of 55, 46, 40, 39, 30, 30, 29, 24 and 21.

Steve Singh (o40) managed breaks of 39, 24 and 23 in his win over Vince Fitter (o20) and former league player Andy Wheatley (scr) made a winning return to the league with a 200-131 score against Chris Dunmore (o20)
Consti travelled to the new Donington B team and came away with a 5-2 win.

However it was a closely fought match with Mick Pearl (r70) winning by one point against John Bellerby (r90) for Donington.

League chairman Neil Reynolds (o20) lost by four to Consti’s Alan Hansard (r70) and Stewart Davies (r50) just pipped Neil Burton (r60) to the post to get the win for Consti.

Pyramid A are third in the league with wins from John Clapton (r100) and Oli Player (r40) but Neil Harvey (r40) of Holbeach B managed to win 200-166 against skipper John Twell (r60), gaining the extra point for Holbeach, but overall Pyramid won 4-3.

It really was a week of close games, as Pyramid B won 4-3 away at Donington A.

Wins came from Phil Cooke (r100) and Darrell Read (r30) for Pyramid and Nigel Brasier (r60) for Donington, but Donington got the bonus point by scoring a total 591 v 538.

Holbeach A hosted Gosberton and Holbeach captain Ben Harding (o10) carried on his good form from last season beating Shane White (o40).

John Dawson (r50), formerly of Long Sutton Club, is back for Holbeach and beat Des Forbes (r50) 200-154.
Gosberton claimed the last game due to Holbeach being a player short on the night, so Holbeach won 4-3.
