Thief ‘wanted to be like everyone else’

A Spalding man stole beauty gift sets from a store to give as a birthday present as he ‘wanted to be like everyone else’.

Sandors Burkevics, 28, of Grange Court, Grange Drive admitted stealing £42 worth of the gift sets from Marks and Spencer in Spalding, when he appeared before magistrates in Boston.

Nick Todd, prosecuting, said Burkevics was stopped by security staff after stealing the items on July 26 and told them it was for a gift.

In mitigation, Philippa Chatterton said Burkevics had been out of work for a considerable time and had just started a new job.

She said one of his new work colleagues had a birthday and he wanted to give her a present ‘like everyone else’

Burkevics, who had a similar conviction just seven weeks before the offence, was fined £160 and ordered to pay £115 in costs and charges.
