Tail enders make game of it

Spalding slipped into the Lincolnshire Board Premier League relegation places after going down by 90 runs at home to Scunthorpe Town.

Nilantha Atapattu (3-20) enjoyed early success with three wickets to reduce the visitors to 41/3 but Spalding had no answer to fourth-wicket pair Karanjit Bansal (132) and Priyanshu Khanduri (70), who added another 136 before falling to Harsh Bhandari and Ollie Dring respectively. Walter Kinlock (2-75) enjoyed late success but Scunthorpe closed their 50 overs on 266/7.

Spalding were always struggling in their innings, falling to 41/4 and 106/7, despite a top score of 26 from Bhandari before a late rally from the tail end. Last-man Matt Key (25) put on 41 for the final wicket with Atapattu (15no) after Kinlock (19) and Ethan Lawrence (17) had dug in to add some respect to their eventual 36.3-over total of 176.

Spalding have a excellent chance of climbing the table on Saturday when they travel to neighbours Market Deeping, who have lost all five games so far but sit a point above their visitors.
