Table tennis round-up: Pottermus Clarets claim Division Two crown

Pottermus Clarets have clinched the Spalding and District League Division Two title with one week to spare.

They faced Castle Sports and took both points in straight ends – which gives them a total of 59 points with four matches left unfinished.

Chasers Hurricane Brothers are only able to score a maximum of 57 in the unlikely event of them managing to score all available points.

In Division One, Jokers were not available to play.

Meanwhile, second-placed Moulton SE faced JDM and took the first two singles and doubles to establish a lead before JDM pulled one back.

However, Andrew Appleby scored his second to record a 4-1 win and draw within one point of the leaders, though they have now completed their league programme.

JDM’s point was scored by Phil Chandler who made a welcome return to competition.

South Holland moved closer to the top as well, completing a match with Outsiders which stood at 1-1. Holland took the doubles in four before John Gilbert also won in four and Jean White rounded things off in five.

The only other match saw Nets n Edges complete their programme with a 3-2 victory over Underdogs.

Playing on two tables, the first round of singles was shared. The Edgers took the lead with a 15-13 fifth end win in the doubles, before sharing the second round of singles.

Elsewhere, the final of the Marylands Cup had Aches and Pains meeting Castle Sports.

Castle’s pair of Ping Wang and Tony Dorey, probably among the most improving players of the season, started on 24 while Hannah Gilbert was on 22 and Garry Wilkinson on 18.

The first game went to Wilkinson 31-29, 31-29, but Ping took the second 31-25, 31-27.

The doubles was also tight, going to three ends before Aches took it 26-31, 31-29, 31-30.

Dorey levelled with a 31-25, 31-27 win but Wilkinson took the final game and title by the same score.
