Spot-on player/boss Danny rescues deserved draw for Long Sutton Athletic

Player/manager Danny Goddard joked that he may have to start picking himself after jumping off the bench to rescue a point for Long Sutton Athletic on Saturday.

The Magpies looked set to suffer their fourth ChromaSport Peterborough League Division One defeat of the campaign at Wittering, but Goddard’s 86th-minute penalty earned them a 2-2 draw.

Sutton had gone ahead early on when Jimmy Ward superbly flicked a free kick into the top corner – but a controversial Nathan Steele spot-kick made it 1-1 at half time.

Chris McRoyall’s free kick put Wittering ahead for the first time after the break, only for Goddard to level the scores once again following a handball.

“That’s the second time I’ve come off the bench and scored straight away,” said the player/boss. “Maybe I need to start myself!

“I’m pleased we got the draw, we deserved it.

“Other than the Sutton Bridge loss, I don’t think we’ve deservedly lost to anyone this year. I think we just need to stop conceding to set pieces and putting ourselves under pressure.

“I’m happy with how we’re playing and not too concerned at our position.

“The results will come.”
