A depleted Spalding Golf Club scratch side battled to an admirable 3-3 draw with rivals Toft Hotel GC in their latest South Lincs League clash.

With county commitments leaving Spalding a little under-strength, they did well to take a share of the spoils at the Surfleet course.

The all-important wins for the home side came from Keith Hearne and Mark Cooley (5&3), Dan Hines and Chas Lacey (3&2) and Mal Wray and young gun Hugo Kedzlie (4&3).

Meanwhile, Spalding GC also had the honour of hosting the Lincolnshire men’s first team against a strong Norfolk side.

In what was the counties’ first Anglian League match of the season, they secured a 6-6 tie at Surfleet.

Spalding’s Simon Richardson, who was selected as part of the team, lost his morning foursomes but halved his afternoon singles game.

The county second side were also in action in the reverse fixture against their Norfolk counterparts, played at Sheringham.

Spalding duo Andy Grimwood and Ollie Mitchell halved their morning foursomes game, before Grimwood won his singles game 1up in the afternoon to help secure a good 6.5-5.5 win for Lincolnshire.

  • Spalding’s third team, playing at home against Stoke Rochford GC, managed to evade most of the heavy showers in their latest social match, which resulted in a 3-3 tie.

Winning pairs for the home team were Ray Barnett and Rod Filby (1up), Simon Rothwell and David Bergmann (6&5), with the best performance coming from Peter Jullien and Monty Brittain winning (7&5).

  •  Spalding Golf Club was also the venue for the Lincolnshire Schools Golf championship, with most of the counties’ best young talent on show.

The Spalding juniors fared well in the windy conditions, with Hugo Kedzlie (80-4=76)in the winning Stamford School trio team event and third in the individual gross score competition with 80.

Twin sister Matilde Kedzlie retained the girls’ title with a gross 95 (nett 78), while Calum Walker (82-9=73) had the best nett score of the day with his 73.

Other leading nett scores: 4th – Hugo Kedzlie (76); 5th – Edward Brand (77); 7th – Matilde Kedzlie (78).
