Spalding water taxi pilot thanked for ‘saving 225 lives’

A Spalding water taxi pilot who gave his first pint of blood 44 years ago has been formally thanked for making his 75th donation.

Terry Day received the crystal award at the Trent Region Blood Donors’ award ceremony.

His first donation was in 1971 when he was in the Royal Navy. The local blood donor team visited HMS Drake where he was stationed and asked if he would donate.

Terry, who is also secretary of Spalding branch of the Royal Naval Association, has no intention of calling it a day and hopes to make 100 donations.

He continues to donate because he enjoys helping his community and feels it is the right thing to do.

Each blood donation can potentially save the lives of up to three people, so if a donor has given blood 75 times they have helped save the lives of up to 225 patients.
