Spalding United boss Chris Rawlinson admits that he’s considering adding a new striker to his squad – if the right player becomes available.
Rawlinson admits to being “a little concerned” by the Tulips’ lack of goals in pre-season so far following the departures of free-scoring duo Bradley Wells and Leon Mettam over the summer.
Frontmen Gary King and Danny Durkin have arrived at the Sir Halley Stewart Playing Field, while the Spalding supremo handed a trial to James Tricks in Saturday’s 2-0 win over Peterborough Northern Star.
Rawlinson said: “I think we’re pretty much set in defence and midfield.
“Of course, we’re never going to be able to replace somebody like Nathan Stainfield or Bradley Wells.
“I’m very happy with the squad, but a few of the performances so far in pre-season have made me think we may need an extra striker.
“If the right player becomes available, we’ll perhaps dip back into the market. But they’d have to be right for us.”
Spalding continued their pre-season campaign with a 3-0 defeat against Kettering Town at the Sir Halley on Tuesday night.
And next up is a tricky trip to step three side Halesowen Town on Saturday (3pm).
They should have young midfielder Liam Harris involved after snapping him up last week.
The energetic ex-Lincoln City scholar was playing in Sweden last season and has inked forms to join the Tulips this season.
Rawlinson feels that the squad at his disposal is capable of repeating last season’s heroics in Evo-Stik NPL Division One South, when they finished third.
He insists that the aim remains to clinch promotion, but admits that “around ten other teams” will have the same goal.
“I think things are coming along nicely,” added the Spalding boss. ”
“We’ve made a few changes, but our shape is looking good in pre-season.
“Liam will be a good addition. He’ll add youthful pace and energy to our midfield and brings something that we haven’t currently got.
“Overall, I’m happy. We’ve got an aim of getting out of this league and I feel we’re well placed.
“But I’m well aware that there are around ten other teams will want to do the same thing.”
