Spalding shopkeeper sold food with foreign language labels

FOODA Spalding shopkeeper has been sentenced to a six-month conditional discharge for selling food labelled in a foreign language.

Mr Weshyar Sadiqi (32), of Kubus on Sheepmarket, pleaded guilty to two charges relating to the sale of food items that were not labelled in English at Boston Magistrates’ Court last week.

More than 60 Polish-labelled products were uncovered in an inspection carried out by Lincolnshire Trading Standards officers on April 12, 2013.

The items were found to be on sale in the main display fridge at the shop.

Emma Milligan from Lincolnshire Trading Standards said: “Food labels contain information that is essential to people’s health and decision to buy, so it’s vital that they can be read.

“Not only do they show details of ingredients and nutritional value, giving you an indication of quality, but they also contain warnings to help those with food intolerances and allergies avoid eating something that could do them real harm.”

Mr Sadiqi was sentenced to a six-month conditional discharge and ordered to pay a £75 contribution to costs and a £20 victim surcharge.
