Spalding shop is closing after century trading

Butters, Spalding. Shop closing. NAMES: Julie GrantA Spalding shop is closing its doors for the final time after more than a century trading in the town.

Butters in New Road, which opened in the late 1800s/early 1900s, will cease trading on August 31.

Many people will remember the shop as a pawn broker’s just after the war until the early 1960s when Peter Buffham was employed by the Chapman family, owners at that time.

Peter and his late wife June bought the business in 1979 and traded in traditional workwear before moving into the outdoor leisure market, such as hiking boots, sleeping bags and tents, and supported many of the local schools and Duke of Edinburgh groups.

Peter and June ran the business until their daughter Julie Grant joined in the early 1990s due to June’s ill health.

Peter retired nine years ago and Julie has run the business since.

She said: “Butters’ outlook on trading has not changed over the years.

“We have stayed old fashioned and traditional with that personal one to one way of serving customers.

“Many moving into the area in recent years have commented how good it was to find one of the few of this type of business.”

Julie has decided that the time has now come to take early retirement from retail to be able to take more time enjoying life with her husband Ed and her family.
