Spalding RFC are gunning for a confidence-boosting win

Skipper Sam Cooke insists nobody at Spalding RFC is feeling sorry for themselves despite a tough start to the new season.

Although Town won their Lincs Cup opener against Kesteven, they’ve since lost five games on the trot – including last weekend’s RFU Intermediate Cup clash at Rushden & Higham (see page 38).

That includes three defeats from as many matches in Midlands Two East (North), but Cooke is hoping to set the record straight when mid-table Market Bosworth visit the Memorial Field on Saturday (3pm).

Making their home a fortress was a priority for Town at the start of the campaign, but they fell at the first hurdle against Dronfield a few weeks ago.

But, with Harry Brown and Harry Sharman set to return from injury and Ben Williamson and Harry Harrison available for selection again, the outlook is looking much brighter for the Elephants.

“There was no lack of passion last weekend,” said captain Cooke, who is also fit again after injury. “It has simply been a selection problem, we’ve been very low on numbers.

“The last few games have been difficult, but there have been positives. Seeing Ben Williamson and Harry Harrison back was a massive boost – hopefully we’ll have them with us for the foreseeable now.

“Nobody at the club is downbeat, we’re still all pulling in the same direction. We’ve spoken about making the Memorial Field a fortress and, although we lost to Dronfield, we still want to do that.

“We actually didn’t play that badly on that day, we just failed to seal the deal when we had the chance.

“I’m confident that a first win isn’t too far away. Once that happens, I’m sure the confidence will come back.

“Winning breads confidence and, other than the Kesteven game, we’ve not had enough of that so far this season.”

Town go into Saturday’s battle with Bosworth as the league’s basement boys.

The visitors are seventh having won one and drawn one of their three games, although they’re yet to win a match away from home.
