Spalding juniors deserved more from home loss

Spalding RFC’s under-13s suffered a narrow 6-3 home defeat against visitors Peterborough U13s in a close clash.
An early try came in the form of an intercept by Spalding’s Olly Staff, who employed his renowned speed and skills in change of direction to run three quarters of the pitch, beating numerous attempts to stop him.
Spalding went further ahead when scrum-half Harry Stephenson scored from a cheeky ‘pick and go’ from the base of a ruck, showing his scrum-half tenacity.
However, the city side soon restored parity thanks to a pair of quick tries.
The second half was much a continuation of the first, with Town’s youngsters continuing to play a hard game with notable runs from Edward Roffe.
Centre Sampson Allen employed his jackling skills alongside the other backs, with Freddy Forbes – playing at full-back after a recent move from fly -half – also contributing to a robust defensive performance.
However, Peterborough moved 5-2 ahead with further scores, before Spalding had the last word when Justin Coman made a decisive dash for the line to score a third for the hosts.
p Spalding under-16/17s held opponents Deepings to an exciting friendly draw.
The game was arranged to allow some of the younger players, who will be eligible for the Colts age group next season, some competitive action.
A draw was a fair reflection of the action.
p Spalding RFC’s first team are back in action this Saturday after having no fixture last weekend.
They travel to leaders Daventry (2.15pm) for a top-of-the-table clash between two sides that have won all ten of their Midlands Two East (South) so far this season.
