Spalding Golf Club talent Wallace waltzes to overall glory

Wayne Wallace won Spalding Golf Club’s 2019 Free Press competition by two shots after shooting two impressive rounds.

The four-handicapper finished on three-under-par overall after scores of 71 and 70 at the Surfleet course on rounds played on July 21 and August 18.

Richard Edwards (9) 72+71=143 (-1) was second, with John Barrett (17) 71+74=145 (+1) completing the top three.

Fourth place went to 14-handicapper Andrew Coaten 76+70=146 (+2), with James McMartin (30) 74+72=146 (+2) rounding off the top five.

  • Spalding’s C Horspole achieve a hole in one at the final bank holiday scramble event of Spalding’s 2019 social calendar on Monday.

That ace on the sixth hole helped the team of T Horrocks, D Bland, P Funnel and Horspole to first place in 52.95pts.

J Charles, W Lammin, D Walker and J Mason (55.55pts) and S Thorpe, T Thorpe, D West and N West (56.3pts) were second and third respectively.

  • Spalding’s seniors played a team from Newark and came away with an impressive 5-3 win.

The outstanding win came from Shaun Gibson and Tony Prince (6&5), but the overall result was still in the balance until the final game when

Dave Halteck and Bernard Herbert only edged their way in front on the very last hole of the match.

  • Last Tuesday saw a team from Spalding seniors visit Belton Park Golf Club.

The team had three games that went to the last hole and seniors captain Peter Jullien and Albert Jacobs agreed a half on the 17th after a tight match when the team could not lose.

  • Spalding’s juniors took part in the South Lincolnshire Golf League in a triangulated match play series in August, with the three rounds played and hosted by the clubs involved.

Sleaford GC (27 points), were the overall winners from Boston GC (24 points) in second, with Spalding GC just off the pace in third on 22 points.

Spalding did, however, win the final match played at Boston as they accumulated a very creditable 12 points against Boston (9 points) and Sleaford (4 points.)

  • The annual Captain versus President competition took place on Friday.

Some 28 golfers, many of them former captains of the club, played an enjoyable round at the Surfleet course and enjoyed dinner in the clubhouse afterwards.

  • Some 32 ladies from Spalding travelled to Middleton Hall Golf Club for an exchange day.

The weather was ideal for golf with sunshine and a cooling breeze.

The competition saw teams of four take part in a Stableford, with two scores to count except on the five par threes where all four counted.

The winners were Ruth Atkins, Jean White, Jennifer Pipe and Elizabeth Holbrook, who scored 99 points.

  • Last Wednesday saw 35 Spalding ladies enter the Myrtle Glenny Stableford competition.

The winner, with 38 points and a handicap cut of one shot, was Jacqui Walton.

Second was Rosamund Barnett (36 points and a handicap cut of one), with third place going to Dianne Rafferty (35 points).
