Spalding garden with Oriental theme impresses East Midlands In Bloom judges

A Spalding garden with a Japanese theme captured the eye of East Midlands In Bloom 2016 judges.

So much so that Terry and Judy Wing’s pride won a gold in the Frank Constable MBE Award for best residential garden.

The retired couple have been at 64 Park Avenue since it was built in 1962. The front garden was lawn until Terry bought his wife a bonsai tree about ten years ago and the couple fell in love with the idea of creating a Zen garden.

Judy readily admits that it is Terry who is largely responsible for its upkeep. It features bonsai trees, Ilex crenata and rocks and stones set in swirling gravel – representing an island in the middle of an ocean and the path to peace.

Terry said: “The begonias add a bit of colour and I shall be putting in winter pansies.”

The couple, who are members of Fenland Bonsai Club, are delighted with the win.
