Spalding and District Table Tennis League season ends with whimper as key fixtures aren’t completed

The Spalding and District Table Tennis League (sponsored by Vital Recruitment) finally called an end to its 2015/16 season – but it would be too much to say that it was completed.

In a season that has been dogged by problems – only once in 22 weeks were all the scheduled matches played – there were still eight unfinished matches at the end.

However, on the final night just one match took place between Hurricane Brothers and MatDuf which the former, holding a 2-0 lead, extended to a 4-1 result.

None were played in Division One, because the players needed were not available. With that in mind, the table remains the same as the previous week in what was a highly unsatisfactory conclusion.

That means Bladerunners were crowned champions, with South Holland not getting any of their three games in hand played.

On a more positive note, the final of the Roy Gibson trophy was played and Daniel Dorey (starting on 18) defeated Richard Matthews (17) 31-25, 30-31, 31-22.

That was a first title for a promising new member of the league.

Now the league goes fully into summer mode. Last week saw every table active once again during the evening and the league had four visitors as well.

The league now has to look forward to the AGM, which is not scheduled yet but likely to be in mid-August.

There is much for the membership to consider, as two members of the committee are resigning from posts – and at present there are no obvious replacements.

At this point, the position of the league for next season could be precarious. With that in mind, any member wishing to bring points to the current committee need to do so quickly.

  • The league meet every Wednesday (7.30pm) at the Castle (£3 charge for costs).
