Spalding Golf Club’s 2nd team took a giant step towards winning their division of the South Lincolnshire Scratch League following a 5-1 away win against their counterparts at Sleaford.
In a good team performance, the winning pairs for Spalding were Mark Mitchell and Mark Dodds (2&1), Jerry Philo and Mark Jones (2up), Phil Tweddell and Paul Johnson (1up), Richard Laud and Chris Moxon (3&2) and Calum Walker & Chris Ward (3&1).
Spalding do have one match to play, at home against current champions and only contenders, Belton Park, in what could be a winner-takes-all scenario.
However, Belton do have another match to play, at home to winless and already relegated Stoke Rochford.
Meanwhile, the top team consolidated their mid-table league position with a 3-3 home tie against the potential champions, who are also from Belton Park.
Their winning pairs were Andy Grimwood and James Crampton (2&1) and Wayne Wallace and Mark Cooley (2up).
The pairings of Keith Hearne and Ollie Mitchell and Harry Hunt and Nick Holmes both halved their games.
- A superb 42-point haul from Alex Callaway (27 handicap) won him one of the junior section’s major competitions of the season, the Sharpe Cup.
The 18-hole Stableford format, which was played off the back tees, was a high scoring tournament with Callaway winning by four points from Calum Walker (7) in second spot.
Will Hopkins (4) was third with 37points, with Lewis Wright (34pts), Hugo Kedzlie (33pts) and Calum Lewis (32pts) completing the leaderboard.
p Spalding’s mixed side drew their latest fixture 4-4 against Peterborough Milton.
The winning pairs for Spalding were Ray Harrison and Chris Vickers (3&1), Steve Leggett and Anne Ellis (4&3), Doug Garfoot and Chris Leggett (3&2) and Keith Moore and Lisa Howling (7&6).
- Bob Sutton, Jerry Philo and Hugo Kedzlie were the pick of the 36 entries in the penultimate 13-hole Wednesday evening Stableford competition after all scored 30 points.
Other leading scores: 29pts – Mark Cooley; 28pts – Mark Payne; 27pts – John Cretney, John Barrett, Chas Lacey, Andy Grimwood and Simon Creasey.
