Dr Michael Gilbert OBE has been named the new president of the Spalding Gentleman’s Society.
He’s taking over the role from Tom Grimes after the group’s AGM last weAek in Broad Street Methodist Church.
Others elected into positions include Sharon Hoult, chair of the Outreach and Engagement Committee, Sue Hughes, the co-ordinator for the Centre for Fenland Studies and the Spalding Victoria County History Project, Diane Clay as librarian, David Gratton as treasurer and Jonathan Dobbs was re-elected to the SGS council.
The Broad Street museum is temporarily closed to the public for repairs and there’s a rotating exhibition and a local history library at Ayscoughfee Hall Museum.
Next spring it will open a second gallery at Ayscoughfee.
Its museum is open Wednesday to Sunday 10.30am to 4pm.
The group’s fortnightly public lectures continue at Broad Street Methodist Church, tomorrow (Friday, October 25) at 7.30pm with a talk entitled ‘Historic Building, Myth Busting’ by Dr James Wright.
A society spokesman said: “Go to any ancient building and there will be interesting, exciting, and romantic stories presented to the visitor.
“James will explain the development of such myths and investigate the underlying truths behind them.”
