Snooker round-up: The top tier title race is heating up nicely as Holbeach C rise

Holbeach C are emerging as potential dark horses for the Spalding and District Snooker League Division One title after picking up a 4-2 win over club mates Holbeach A to go second on Thursday night.

Wins from Dan Ashton (O7), Nick Edwards (R7) and Shuan Lee (O28) kept the C side very much in the hunt for the league’s top prize.

It was a clash that yielded a number of fine breaks, with Mark Woodberry (O56) scoring 37 and 29, Mick Pearl (O21) adding a 31 and Mark Gregory (O35) making a 22 clearance.

One of the sides above them at the start of play, Holbeach D, slipped up 5-1 at home against an inspired Services A.

A fine 38 break from Vince Fitter (O35) and Phil Spencer’s (O7) 25 clearance were the highlights for the Spalding side, who are also in and the around the title picture.

At the other end of the table, rock-bottom Consti B enjoyed their fourth win of the season as they edged past club-mates Consti G.

They came from 2-0 down to seal the success, with John Keeton (O7), Mick Johnson (O28) and, on the final black of the match, Martn Fear (scr) all victorious.

Elsewhere in the top tier, Bourne SC A got the better of hosts Services C 4-2.

Mark Gray (O105) made breaks of 30 and 23 before ending with a 22 clearance for them, but it was Ian Clare (O7) who secured the win in the penultimate frame.

Also 4-2 winners were Pyramid D, who got the better of Sutton Bridge B.

Pete Jackson (R7) settled the tie in the final frame, while Wayne Dent (O42) made a 25 clearance for beaten Bridge.

In Division Two, joint leaders Bourne SC C suffered a 4-2 home defeat against Holbeach B. Charlie Mullane (R14) sealed the victory in the final frame, while Jack Chilvers (O21) racked up a 20 break for the beaten hosts.

Behind them, chasers Bourne SC B picked up a 4-2 success at Holbeach C. Their highlight was a 21 break from Nick Cunnington (O7).

One of the week’s big winners were Services E, who enjoyed a 5-1 success over hosts Donington B.

Winning frames for them were George Neary-Phillips (O21), Joel Shears (R14), Ian Smith (scr) and Russ Morse (scr).

It was also 5-1 as Holbeach G picked off hosts Donington A, despite a cool 29 break from the home side’s Tony Scully (O35).

Towards the foot of the standings, two teams picked up welcome four-point hauls.

Gosberton A got the better of hosts Services B 4-2, with Jamie Mumby (scr) claiming a crucial final frame victory to seal it.

Also 4-2 victors were Consti H, who saw off friendly foes Consti F with wins from Seb Grimston (O21), Olly Turner (O21) and Jonny Holdershaw (R14).

In Division Three, high-flying Consti I enjoyed a narrow 4-2 triumph over Consti D in a match that saw three of the five frames going to the black.

Two of those went the way for Stewart Wells (R14) and John Bellerby (R7), with the latter clinching the win.

Below them, Whittlesey A suffered a surprising 5-1 reverse at Pyramid B.

Regular break maker Lester Gaunt (O49) chipped in with a 21 for the victorious Bourne side.

Meanwhile, Consti J got the better of Gosberton B in a clash that went right down to the wire.

Stewart Davies (O7) pipped Chris Mumby (R14) 74-72 on the last black of the game to give the Spalding side a 4-2 victory.

It was also 4-2 as Gosberton D got the better of friendly rivals Gosberton C.

Brad Brinkman (O14) shone for them with breaks of 31 and 25, but it was Decon Hempsall (R7) who clinched the victory in the penultimate frame of the game.
