Snooker round-up: Champions Holbeach A lay down a strong early marker

Defending Division One champions Holbeach A made an imperious start to the new Spalding and District Snooker League season on Thursday night.

Picking up where they left off, Holbeach handed promoted Division Two champions Boundary A a 6-0 reverse in what was the top flight’s only opening night whitewash.

Jem Merrison (O42) and Colin Dodds (O21) both made solid starts with the cue, scoring breaks of 24 and 22 respectively.

Overall it was a high-quality opening night, with a host of impressive breaks scored.

Leading the way was former professional Mark Gray (O105), who sank a 73 in Bourne SC A’s 4-2 triumph over Tulips B.

Neil Reynolds also shone with scores of 51 and 33 for Donington C in their 5-1 victory at Pyramid A.

A cool 33 from Mick Johnson (O35) wasn’t enough to stop Consti B losing 4-2 at home against Pyramid D, however.

But a 30 break from Vince Fitter (O28) and Mike Knight’s (O21) 27 clearance helped Services A beat club-mates Services C 4-2.

In Division Two, Donington A made the perfect start by humbling Holbeach B 6-0 on their home baize.

Jean Thompson (R28), John George (R7), Nigel Brasier (O14), Aaron Scully (R14) and Tony Scully (O35) all enjoyed frame wins.

Boundary C were also in impressive form as they beat Sutton Bridge 5-1 on the road, with Dougie Lythgoe (O14) sinking a 22 clearance.

That trick was repeated by Consti F, who saw off Donington B 5-1 – albeit in a game with three frames that went to the final black.

Seb Grimston also impressed as Consti H beat Consti G 4-2. The O21 handicapper made a 24 break and 25 clearance.

In Division Three, Nick Savic (O56) had a night to remember as he made a fabulous 58 break in Consti A’s 4-2 win over Gosberton C.

Consti E made a strong start too, beating Pyramid E 5-1 on their home table.

Another player impressing was Brad Brinkman (R7), who sank a 41 break to help Gosberton D beat Consti D 4-2.
