Singers pick their favourites for church return

The South Holland Singers are returning to Spalding Parish Church for the first time in many years in a summer concert with a difference on Saturday, June 13 at 7.30pm.

In an SHS first, the concert features a programme of songs from a range of genres chosen by the choir members themselves to reflect the many pieces performed over the last few years.

This ‘Choir Favourites’ concert, its second of 2026, will be a welcome return to Spalding’s magnificent 13th century parish church, St Mary and St Nicolas.

Alongside the ‘favourites’, the choir will also be performing Bob Chilcott’s ‘Samba Mass’, a joyous, colourful and occasionally funky setting of the Latin Missa brevis, originally in rehearsal by just as Covid struck.

Also in the programme is ‘I Was Glad’, a setting of Psalm 122 by British composer Andrew Downes (1950 – 2023), a pioneering and original voice in British music who mentored generations of students, including the choir’s musical director Samantha Graper at the Birmingham Conservatoire.

Tickets are £10 and are available from choir members, via Facebook and the SHS website or on the door. Under-16s are admitted free of charge.

The South Holland Singers rehearse every Thursday evening at Spalding Baptist Church in Swan Street, from 7.30pm to 9pm during the autumn and spring terms.

The choir usually gives at least two concerts a year but also gets involved in other events in the area.

A spokesman for the South Holland Singers said: “New members are always welcome – there are no auditions and although an ability to read music is helpful, it is not essential.
