Sharks bite back to earn end-of-summer success

Spalding Water Polo Club held their annual end-of-summer tournament at Bourne Outdoor Pool with teams from Grantham and Northampton joining two Spalding teams, Sharks and Orcas.

Sharks opened the day with a 9-5 defeat against Grantham. The hosts could not contain Olly Civil, who scored six goals.
Orcas then shared a 9-9 draw with Northampton. A penalty shoot-off was needed for the additional point and the Spalding side emerged victorious, thanks to goalkeeper Matty Zajac saving two.
Orcas then faced Northampton but again it was the visitors who took the win, 12-7.
A close encounter saw Sharks see off Grantham 5-4.
The day’s winners came down to a face-off between the Spalding teams, with Sharks knowing a win would seal tournament victory. In another tight game, honours were even at 5-5 until the closing stages when Sharks struck twice to win 7-5.
The last match saw Northampton beat Grantham 4-3, leaving Sharks as overall victors by a single point.
Phil James was voted Sharks’ most valuable player, with Adam Found taking the Orcas’ title.
Spalding Water Polo Club thanked Bourne Outdoor Pool for hosting the event and to all the clubs for volunteering support, with special thanks to top official Dave Lord, Sally Hook and her table team and all the spectators and family who attended.
For anyone interested in taking up the sport or seeking more details, Spalding Water Polo Club runs on Tuesdays 8-10pm. Contact them through their Facebook page or visit them on club nights at Castle Sports Swimming Pool.
