To commemorate the 100th anniversary of the “big push” on the Somme, the Spalding British Legion, in association with the Rev John Bennett and Chris Carter from Tulip Radio, are organising a short service at the Cenotaph in Ayscoughfee Gardens, Spalding, on Friday.
Proceedings will begin, as they did then, at 7.30am, with whistles blowing, signifying the launch of that fateful assault on the enemy lines. A short service, laying of wreaths and crosses will follow. It is recognised that this is a very early start for many but it does faithfully follow the timing our brave Tommies’ experienced.
The Pinchbeck branch of the RBL holds its Remembrance of the Battle of the Somme on Friday at Pinchbeck War Memorial.
A service of commemoration takes place at 10.45am when names of the fallen will be read, then wreaths and crosses will be laid.
This is followed by a short service, after which light refreshments will be served in the church hall.
