Seriously injured man airlifted to hospital by coastguard helicopter after a fire got out of control

An elderly man suffered serious burn injuries after a garden fire got out of control and was airlifted to hospital by the coastguard search and rescue helicopter.

Emergency services descended on Willesby Road in Spalding last night (Tuesday, July 29) shortly after 7pm last night.

Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue said both crews from Spalding attended the incident after a fire in a brazier bin got out of control causing burns injuries to a man in his 60s.

Alongside a number of crews from Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue were police officers, ambulance crews and a crew from the Magpas (Mid Anglia) Air Ambulance.

But with their helicopter not available the Coastguard search and rescue helicopter was despatched from Humberside to take an injured person to Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham after landing at the nearby Castle Sports Complex.

Lincolnshire Police described the man’s condition as “serious”.

A spokesman for Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue said: “At 7.12pm on Tuesday, Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue were called to an incident in the garden of a domestic property on Willesby Road in Spalding where a fire in a brazier bin had got out of control.

“Both crews from Spalding attended to extinguish the fire and assisted EMAS to treat the occupant who had sustained burns.”

An East Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman said they were called to a medical emergency.

The spokesman said: “We received a call at 7.07pm on 28 July to a private address in Spalding. The caller reported a medical emergency. We sent a doctor in a car, two paramedics in ambulance cars and a crewed ambulance.

“We also sent a coastguard helicopter to assist us in transporting the patient to Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham.”

A spokesman for HM Coastguard, said: “The Aeronuatical Rescue Coordination Centre received a call to assist Lincolnshire Police with an incident in Spalding at around 8.30pm last night (July 28).

“We sent a coastguard search and rescue helicopter from Humberside, which transported an injured person to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham.”

A spokesman for Lincolnshire Police, said: “We received a report of a concern for safety at an address in Willesby Road, Spalding, at around 7.15pm on Tuesday  July 28.

“A man in his 60s was airlifted to hospital with serious injuries.”

A Magpas spokesman said: “At 8:22pm last night (July 28) Magpas Doctor Alison McInerney and Critical Care Paramedic Andy Ormiston arrived at an emergency incident in Spalding.

“They worked alongside HM Coastguard Search and Rescue to airlift a patient to hospital.

“An EMAS paramedic crew, Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue Service and Lincolnshire Police were all also in attendance.”
