Scimitar Spalding now have a lot to celebrate

Scimitar Spalding Volleyball Club are celebrating winning the Lincolnshire Volleyball League on set difference, following a dramatic final day victory at long-term rivals Lincoln Cannons.

Going into the match needing a win to finish above Boston team Kings of Court, the entire squad played calmly and effectively to secure a hard-fought 3-0 win.
Chairman Ben Cook said: “Winning the league this year represents the end of a remarkable revival for the club.
“When I became chairman we had no money, no kit, no structure, our junior section had just closed, and we were not winning any matches.
“Now we have a thriving junior section, a sponsored, modern kit, up to date policies and procedures, are not facing bankruptcy and have winning the league to celebrate.”
A mix of returning players, including Dan and Tim Barrass and Doug Burgess, and new players, who made a growing impact over the season such as Ed Hixson, strengthened the squad, in addition to those who had gone through the more difficult times such as Cook, coach Sam Newton, captain Nathan Shortland, Isaac Cooke, Olaf Szoka, Dan Bates, Vinnie Apostolov and Sandra Briggs.
Cook added: “We are always on the lookout for new players, be they someone just looking to try a new sport for fun or looking to play in a team environment.
“We have two training sessions each Sunday at Castle Sports Complex – 2pm-3.30pm for juniors and beginners and a more competitive training session from 3.30pm-5pm.
“Anyone of secondary school age or older is welcome to join, but that is also flexible if someone younger wants to try out one of our sessions and feels ready to join.”
