There really is no excuse at all to be bored these summer holidays with a variety of options to keep children entertained, whether they are aged four or 14.
And it really doesn’t matter what they are into, arts, sports, theatre, the outdoors and wildlife or history and culture, there really is something for everyone right on our doorstep.
Below are just a few of our suggestions, but pop along to the tourist information points at the South Holland Centre or Springfields Outlet Shopping and see what else you could be missing out on.
Or, just keep an eye on the Spalding and South Holland Voice for details of other summer holiday programmes, workshops and events.
The South Holland Centre, in Spalding’s town centre, is always a good place to start if you are looking for something to entertain the kids, especially if the weather means outdoor activities are ruled out.
Next Thursday is a prime example – with a To Infinity and Beyond workshop aimed at four to seven year olds.
The youngsters are invited to join Act II for a fun-packed day of drama, songs and games, culminating in a short performance to family and friends.
Other workshops throughout August include Rock School for 12 to 18-year-olds, Fantastic Mr Fox for seven to 13-year-olds and the Zest Summer Challenge for 11 to 25-year-olds.
But if you really don’t want the kids to be stuck indoors, why not make the most of the great outdoors?
Younger children can be entertained for hours at Ayscoughfee Museum and Gardens, then enjoy a picnic or make the most of the on-site cafe.
You could possibly combine it with a trip along the river to Springfields on the water taxi. The knowledgeable pilots can point out some of the varied wildlife in the water and along the banks.
South Holland also has some interesting history to discover – try Moulton Mill, the tallest windmill in the country, or Gordon Boswell’s Romany Museum, where you can catch a glimpse of another time and culture.
Don’t forget the Fun Farm, Weston, and Play Barn at Springfields, or treat them to a session at Laser Storm or Alleycatz ten-pin bowling alley.
For arty youngsters, there’s lots going on at Unique Cottage Studios, with family pottery sessions this Saturday and August 8, or pop in to the Fulney studio for a pottery painting session with Doodles, held every Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 10am to 4pm.
Sporty sorts need not be left out either, with a packed and varied programme at the Castle Sports Complex.
And if you are still struggling for inspiration, download South Holland District Council’s Summer Fun brochure at www.sholland.gov.uk, which is full of ideas for what to do during the school holidays.
