School children celebrate Chinese New Year in style

“Kung hei fat choi!”

Pupils and staff at Surfleet Primary School have wished all a “Happy Chinese New Year”.

Class three, four and five at Surfleet Primary School showing off their creationsOn Friday, February 23, the school held a special day to celebrate the festival and learn more about China’s customs and people.

As many of them as possible wore red clothes to symbolise what the country deems to be its lucky colour.

They then spent the day learning about different aspects of the country.

A number of classes at the school read books and stories from Chinese cultures while there was also creations of puppets, poems and lanterns.

These were displayed at a special assembly at the end of the day, which included a play by Darwin Class on the legend behind why animals are allocated to Chinese years.

Head of school Rick Chipperfield, said: “It’s fantastic to see the children celebrating a different culture.
“It’s great to see them wearing red and putting the effort into their fantastic creations.

“They started the day with nothing and each class has put something together to share a bit about one of the most historic cultures in the world to the rest of the school.”
